The Lake Suviana

The lake

The Lake Suviana is an artificial basin born in 1932 for electricity production. Today it is part of the Regional Park of the Lakes Suviana and Brasimone. Visitors' centers are located in Suviana and Poranceto. In spring and summer, you can relax at the lake, where you can have a pic-nic or a barbecue on the reserved areas. Swimming is allowed on the lake and it represents a wonderful way to escape the heat of the city! For the adventurous types, it is possible to have fun with the tree-climbing and sailing center. On the Limentra river, you can do rafting and attend a golf course, which is located 10 minutes far from the lake. Do not forget to eat crescentine, a traditional dish of Emilia-Romagna!

Hiking

The mountains of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano are the perfect destination for hiking lovers. The Alta Via dei Parchi is a 500 km trail that crosses Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Marche. Two of the 27 stages are included in the Regional Park of the Lakes Suviana and Brasimone. The Park Corno alle Scale is also nearby and reachable by car. Do not miss the Dardagna Waterfalls and the Shrine of St. Mary of the Maple. In the forests nearby it is possible to pick mushrooms after having acquired the license. We are glad to give you all the information! In autumn, it is possible to gather the famous chestnuts of Appennino!

The Mattei Castle

The construction of the Mattei Castle began in 1850 by will of the Earl of Mattei, which inhabited the castle since 1859. The castle is built in Moorish style and subsequently enlarged and modified up to the death of the Earl in 1896. Renovation of the castle started in 2005 and since 2015 it is possible to visit it. We suggest making a reservation!

Churches and Shrines

Several Churches and Shrines are tucked away on the hills and mountains of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano. From the Church of Bargi you will have a breathtaking sight on the Lake Suviana. We suggest a visit at sunset! The Church of the Assumption of Mary is very famous in the area and it has been designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. After a walk in the magic atmosphere of the wood around the old town of Castelluccio you will find the Shrine of St. Mary of the Beech, where every 26th of July there is the celebration of St. Anna. Don't miss the Shrine of Montovolo and the Shrine of Boccadirio!

The Thermal Water

According to the legend, the thermal water has been discovered in Porretta more than 2000 years ago and the thermal baths have become more and more famous starting from the XV century. The properties of the water are attractive thanks to the huge amount of mineral salts, sulphur, bromine and iodine dissolved in it. For this reason, the water is used for both medical cure and entertainment, perfect for a relaxing break! In some periods of the year, it is possible to attend a guided tour of the springs.

The town of Porretta Terme is also very famous for the Porretta Soul Festival, which takes place every year in July.

Don't forget to taste the Tortino Porretta!

The Old Villages

The village of Scola, a suburb of Grizzana Morandi, shows to the visitors several historical homes that are very well preserved. Stagno offers suggestive views and glimpses of Lake Suviana, and the village of Chiapporato is reachable only on foot. In this village, electricity was brought only in 2005! Don't miss the Castle of the Manservisi Family in Castelluccio, built in the XVII century.

Every August a famous medieval commemoration takes place in Castel di Casio, around the medieval tower built in the XIII century. In wintertime, we suggest to visit the living nativity scene in the village of Pietracolora and the mechanical nativity of the Capuchin Monks in Porretta Terme, open all year long with a coverage of 200 m.
